FRI. 03/MON. 06 – LABOR DAY CAMPING WEEKEND. (17224) Friday evening begins our Labor Day holiday weekend of tent camping in Cowan’s Gap State Park with hiking, swimming, and other activities. SUN. 05 – EVANSBURG STATE PARK. (19426) We will walk the gentle rolling hills on both sides of the Skippack Creek. Hike is about 5-6 miles. Depart G&R at 10:30 AM. in front of Chestnut Hill Library. (Regional Rail R8 arrives at Chestnut Hill West Station at 10:19.) Bring lunch and water. Cost: $0.75 plus $3.00 CTDTOE. Doris Grubin, 215-879-5837.
SAT. 11 – 82nd ANNIVERSARY ANNUAL DINNER & ELECTION OF OFFICERS. (19115) We return to Kelly’s Seafood House, 9362 Old Bustleton Avenue (Welsh Road & Bustleton Avenue) for our dinner and election of officers. We have always enjoyed good food and socialization at this annual event and the 82nd promises to be no exception. Kelly’s serves fine food at a reasonable cost in our own private room. Social hour at 7:00 PM, dinner at 7:45 PM. There is an cash bar for those of you who desire. PLEASE HAVE YOUR $ 20.00 PER PERSON CHECK IN BY TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7th. When you send in your check, make your selection for either Prime Rib or Broiled Salmon Filet. SUN. 12 - HAMMER CREEK. (17960) Depart G&R at 7:45 AM. This Lebanon-Lancaster County hike is in the Hammer Creek area with some rocky areas. Be prepared to climb hills on trails that are moderate to difficult. 10 miles. Cost: $0.75 plus $7.50 CTDTOE. Leaders: Mike Hughes 267-784-5756, Tom Weaber, 717-274-3922.
SUN. 12 - PALMYRA COVE NATURE PARK, NJ. (08065) Depart F&B at 11:00 AM or meet at the Palmyra Cove Nature Center (on the NJ side of the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge ) at 11:30 AM. We hike 6 to 8 miles depending on the tide on the river and trail conditions. We will also visit the very interesting, Nature Center. MON. 13 – LEADERS MEETING. Meet at 7:00 PM at the home of Joan Finger, 2120 Chancellor Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103, 215-561-3176. This meeting is when we finalize our upcoming six month hike schedule. BATONA members who are considering leading or co-leading hikes or who want to become involved in general club business are encouraged to attend. This is a good opportunity to participate and learn about BATONA’s involvement in the trail/hiking community.
SAT. 18 - Pennypack ecological restoration Trust. (19006) Depart from the intersection of Davisville & York Roads (R2 - Willow Grove Train Station, near the #55 and #22 bus stops) at 10:00 AM, or the Trust Center Office (2955 Edgehill Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA) at 10:15 AM. Hike the trust grounds and along the Pennypack Creek in Bryn Athyn for a walk in the upper Pennypack area. 6-8 miles. Cost: $0.75 plus $1.00 CTDTOE. Leader: Mike Hughes, 267-784-5756.
SUN. 19 - NOLDE STATE FOREST. (19607) Depart G&R at 9:30 AM or at the Saw Mill Parking lot on Route 625 at 11:00 AM. Nolde State Forest encompasses 666 acres of deciduous woodlands and coniferous plantations. A network of trails, hills, streams, ponds and mature woodlands make for an interesting and beautiful Autumn day. Cost: $0.75 plus $10.50 CTDTOE (from G&R.) 9 miles. Bring lunch and water. THUR. 23 - MANYUNK CANAL. (19127) Depart 6:15PM outside the United Artists Theater on Main Street (north of Ridge.) This is a 5 mile moonlight twilight hike. We will hike along the Manyunk Canal. Cost: $0.75. Leader: Bob Miller, 215-713-5957.
SAT. 25 - RIDLEY CREEK STATE PARK (19063) An autumn hike in one of our largest local parks. Depart 10:00 AM from the upper parking lot at the park office. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 252 in Newtown Square, drive west on Route 3 about 2.5 miles. Turn left at the park entrance and follow signs to the park office. OR, enter the park from Gradyville Road which runs from Route 252 to Route 352 and follow signs to park office. We’ll hike on a variety of trails, going up and down hills. 5-6 miles. SUN. 26 - LEHIGH GAP WILDLIFE REFUGE. (18080) Depart from 309 Cinema at 9:30 AM. The Lehigh Gap Nature Center area has a variety of trails for us to explore, including ups and downs, rail trails, plus beautiful views of the Lehigh River and valley. SAT. 02/SUN. 03 - AT MAINTENANCE WEEKEND. (18091) We will be doing maintenance on our section of the AT both days this weekend. Come out one or both days to help BATONA maintain this 8.5 mile section of the 2175 mile trail. Depart from 309 Cinema at 8:15 AM. Call leader (Mike Hughes) in advance if you need transportation. We will be doing trail clearing, painting blazes, etc. as needed. The important work trip is no harder than normally done in your back yard and as a bonus you will get to see the beautiful autumn colors. No cost. SUN. 10 - Delaware Water Gap. (18324) Depart G&R at 7:45 or 8:00 AM at Ply. Mtg. 15 miles. We ascend to the AT, using the Copper Mines Trail and descending on the Rattle Snake Swamp Trail. Cost: $0.75 plus $16.00 CTDTOE. Leader: David Stein, 215-508-5915 david0857@verizon.net.
SUN. 10 - RIDLEY CREEK STATE PARK. (19063) Depart from the Media R3 Train Station at 10:00 AM or at the bottom of Chapel Hill Road at 10:20 AM. We will hike on a mix of paved and dirt trails winding through this lovely park. Some of the hike will follow the picturesque Ridley Creek bed before heading into the hilly woodlands. If we are lucky the Autumn colors will be coming out, making this day even more beautiful. 7-9 miles. Bring lunch and water. Cost $ 0.75 and $2.00 CTDTOE (from Media.) FRI. 15 / SUN. 17 - AUTUMN IN ELKMONT. (18616) Join us for a delightful weekend of hiking in one of the most beautiful areas of Pennsylvania. The Autumn is a wonderful time for hiking in this pristine part of the state. We will have two days of great hiking with 10+ miles on the first day and at least 6 on the second. This trip includes 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and dinner, plus wine & cheese on Saturday night. Cost: $80.00. Limited to 12 people. Call Allen or Lore Britton at 717-741-0624, loralhiker@verizon. SAT. 16 – PENNYPACK/LORIMER PARKS. (19152) Depart from Benton Avenue, just NW of Bustleton Avenue at 9:45 AM (Rt. 58 bus from F&B). We will hike the trails on both sides of the creek in these pretty urban parks. Lunch will be at the beautiful picnic grove in Lorimer Park (picnic tables, restrooms & water fountain.) SUN. 17 - ROARING CREEK. (17815) Depart from G & R at 8:00 AM. Hiking on donated land by the Roaring Creek Water Co. to PA. State Forest Land. Experience a 15 mile hike along an old miners trail nestled in between continuous mountain chains. Moderate hiking conditions. Cost: $0.75 plus $12.50 CTDTOE. Leader: Mike Hughes, 267-784-5756.
SAT. 23 - PULPIT AND PINNACLE VIA HAMBURG RESERVOIR. (19529) Depart G&R at 8:00 AM. Starting at Eckville we hike to the Pulpit and Pinnacle via the Hamburg Reservoir to enjoy the wonderful views from the Pulpit and the Pinnacle. Hike has two STRENOUS climbs. Most of the time will be on the AT with a bypass to the Hamburg Reservoir. 13+ miles. Cost: $0.75 plus $14.00 CTDTOE. Leader: Paul Piechoski, 215-844-6190.
SUN. 24 - CARBON COUNTY, PA HIKE. (18235) Depart Ply. Mtg. at 9:30 AM (Alternate meeting place: Shell Station/Subway just off the PA Turnpike - Northeast Extension – Rt. 476 - Exit #74 – Mahoning Valley on Rt. 209 on the right hand side going towards Lehighton at 10:45 AM.) Anyone needing transportation from G&R must contact the leader before Friday October 22nd to make arrangements. We will hike somewhere in scenic Carbon County, PA. (Check the BATONA web site for updates as to the final hike location about a week before.) Possible water crossings and some bushwhacking. The fall colors should be around their peak. 8-10 miles. Cost: $0.75 plus up to $15.00 (actual cost will depend on final destination) plus share of turnpike toll CTDTOE. Leader: Milt Cannan, 856-983-9076.
SUN. 31 - KING RANCH. (19375) Depart G&R at 8:00 AM or Ply. Mtg. at 8:15. Once part of King Ranch, and now divided into estates, the land of Buck and Doe Valley Farms still retains its undeveloped character, with hills, streams, woods and high grassy meadows. The hike follows the same route as the spring King Ranch trek and allows the hiker the opportunity to walk over these lovely green hills of the Brandywine Valley during a different season with double the effort for double the pleasure compared to the shorter Buck & Doe afternoon hike. This is a STRENUOUS hike of 15 miles with lots of ups and downs. Bring boots, lunch and water. Cost: $0.75 plus $9.00 CTDTOE and $1.00 contribution for the Brandywine Conservancy. SUN. 31 - BUCK AND DOE. (19375) Depart 69th Street at 11:30 AM. This traditional Autumn hike follows the course of Buck Run upstream to the covered bridges. We climb a hill for beautiful, unforgettable views of Chester County. Returning, we follow Doe Run, ascend high grassy meadows and finish in the late afternoon with a walk along a quiet country road back to Mortonville. 7 miles. Cost: $0.75 plus $6.00 CTDTOE plus $1.00 for the Brandywine Conservancy. Call leaders to meet at the trailhead.
