FEBRUARY, 2012

SUN. 05 - WISSAHICKON AND WEST MOUNT AIRY. (19118) Depart G & R at 9:00 AM. Come out and scale "Mount Airy". We will wander quiet streets and trails not familiar to many. Part of our hike will be in the Wissahickon. Snow or ice cancels. 10 to 12 miles. Cost: $0.75. Leader: Paul Piechoski, 215-844-6190.

SUN. 05 - RIDLEY CREEK STATE PARK. (19063) Depart from the Media Station of the Media/Elwyn-R3 Train Line at 10 AM or at the bottom of Chapel Hill Road at 10:20. Hiking on a mix of paved and dirt trails winding through this lovely park. Some of the hike will follow the picturesque Ridley Creek bed before heading into the hilly woodlands. 7 miles. SAT. 11 & SUN. 12 - BATONA TRAIL MAINTENANCE. Due to low or no turnout (plus rain last year) the last 3 years, not much has gotten done on our 30 mile section of the trail. Therefore two days have been scheduled for this maintenance with the meeting place and time the same for both days. Come out for one day or both. We REALLY need your help for this project! Depart Red Lion at 9:30 AM. Anyone needing transportation must contact the leader before Friday Feb. 10th to make arrangements. The meeting place for anyone needing transportation to the hike will be the NJ Transit bus route 406 stop at the Marlton Post office on Main Street in Marlton. This is an easy work trip to keep our own Batona Trail in top shape. Bring lunch and clipping tools (if you have them) or use Batona's. Since opening in 1961 as a 30 mile trail, it has become a well used part of New Jersey's trail system. With the help of volunteers like you, the trail has grown to 50 miles long. No cost. SUN. 19 - WISSAHICKON. (19118) Depart G & R at 8:30 AM and enjoy a 10 mile hike through the trails overlooking the Wissahickon Creek. Cost: $0.75. Leader: Mike Hughes, 267-784-5756.

SUN. 26 - CAPE HENLOPEN STATE PARK. For those using public transportation, take the 101 Septa trolley from 69th St to the Springfield Mall stop. Meet leader at this stop at 8:25 AM. For those driving, meet at 8:30 AM in front of Macy's in the front of the Springfield Mall. 10 mile hike in Delaware's largest state park along the bay and ocean with sand dunes, salt marshes and pine woods. SUN. 04 - RIDLEY CREEK STATE PARK. (19063) Hike through most of this beautiful park, including the less-visited western portion. Enter park via Gradyville Road, follow signs to Park Office/Mansion, park near Mansion, and meet near sign board to begin hike at 9:00 AM. 12-14 miles. Some muddy, wet areas. Boots recommened. Bring lunch and water. Call no later than 10 PM Friday, March 2nd, if requesting transportation. Pickup point is State and Orange Streets in Media. From 69th Street Station, take Media 101 trolley (leaving at 8:04 AM) to arrive at 8:32 AM at the end of the line at Orange Street in Media ($1.00 CTDTOE.) Cost: $0.75. SUN. 04 - LORIMER PARK (19006) Meet at Fox Chase Train Station to depart at 10:30 AM (train arrives at 10:23.) A lovely park in eastern Montgomery County with a number of trails plus a rail-trail of the Reading Railroad. 6-8 miles. Bring lunch and water. Cost $0.75. Leader: Bob Miller, 215-713-5957.

TUE. 06 - LEADERS MEETING (19038) Meet at 7:00 PM at the home of Anna & Michael Alper, 303 Atwood Road, Erdenheim, PA, (215) 233-0916, aniamike@aol.com. We will finalize the upcoming schedule and attend to other club business. If you are interested in leading, co-leading and/or becoming part of organizing club activities this is the venue to attend.

SAT. 10 - OLD PHILADELPHIA WATERFRONT. (19106) Meet at 2:00 PM, call leader for meeting place. Longest hike of the year, 4 centuries. Loop around Water Street, Delaware Avenue, Front & 3rd from Callowhill to Dock Street, New Race Street Pier. Viet Nam and Korean War plus Irish Famine memorials as well as the reconstruction of the original President's house site. 4 miles, cost $0.75. Leader: Herb Schwartz 215-426-0529, herbstairs@aol.com.

SUN. 11 - MIDDLE CREEK. (17039) Depart G & R at 8:15 AM. This is a moderate figure 8 loop hike of 12 miles with several moderate climbs. Middle creek is home to many species of waterfowl and bald eagles are frequently spotted. There is a vista overlooking the lake. Pace will be geared to the group. Meeting place will be Middle Creek Visitors Center in Kleinfeltersville at 9:45. Cost: $0.75 plus $6.00 CTDTOE. Leaders: Mike Hughes, 267-784-5756; Tom Weaber, 717-269-9424.

SAT. 17 (RAIN/SNOW DATE SUN. 18) - INDIAN WALKING PURCHASE TRAINING WALK. (18942) Meet at 10:00 AM from the Landmark Inn, Route 611, Ottsville, PA, across from the Ottsville Post Office. Walking Purchase Historical Marker marks the spot! We'll walk unknown roads and back trails of Tinicum township, Bucks County. Bring water and lunch. You must be able to walk 25 road miles in 6 hours. If you can do this, you have a good chance of completing the Walking Purchase "Mini Walk's". Maps provided. Cost $0.75. SUN.18- PULPIT & PINNACLE (PORT CLINTON LOOP). (19549) Depart G & R at 8:00 AM. We will start at Port Clinton and hike the AT to the Pulpit and Pinnacle overlooks, finishing on the Pinnacles Trail to the Port Clinton fire tower. There will be a short shuttle at the beginning and end of the hike. Strenuous 14 miles. Cost $0.75 plus $14.00 CTDTOE. Leader: Paul Piechoski, 215-844-6190.

SUN. 18 - NORTHERN LIBERTIES, PHILADELPHIA. (19123) Meet at my home, 1247 N. 2nd Street, above Girard Avenue at 2:00 PM, Please call: 215-426-0529 prior to arriving. Walk through Northern Liberties neighborhood, 1800's homes, tiny back streets, wilderness, gardens, and contemporary redevelopments, including the beginning of the Delaware River Walkway along the rear of the Sugar House Casino. 4 miles, cost $0.75. SUN. 25 - BATONA TRAIL RELOCATION INAUGURAL HIKE. (08088) Meet at B & A at 8:45 AM or Red Lion at 10:00 AM. Join us as we celebrate the opening of the newly relocated section of the Batona Trail between Rt. 72 & Rt. 532. The architects & builders of the trail envisioned a WILDERNESS trail through the Pine Barrens. The acquisition of the land which is now the Franklin Parker Preserve made this dream a possibility. Thanks to the resources and hard work of The New Jersey Conservation Foundation, this has now become a reality. The ENTIRE Batona Trail is now a wilderness trail. Enjoy this 7.3 mile section with us and see its unique features & wildlife.
